Norham Station Gallery 5:
August December 2016 - June 2017

Reproduction running-in board on the up platform at Norham presented in BR(NE) livery. This is a more competent job than was seen on the board here in spring 1964.

An array of buckets, filled with water and sand to extinguish fires, was a familiar sight at British railway stations until the 1970s. These ones at Norham station, seen in December 2016, do not appear to be ready for action.

In December 2016 Norham station was bought by its present residents ending the long association with the family of Peter Short, the final stationmaster. This photo in the station forecourt is of
the ‘Short girls’.

Sandra Short lights a casement oil lantern in the forecourt of Norham station in December 2016. The NER (and other companies) used translucent strips mounted on lanterns to display station names; it is not known if this strip is original.

Most of the lanterns on the platforms at Norham and the other NER Kelso Branch stations were of this attractive design.

The interior of the booking office at Norham station is seen in January 2017. To the right of the ticket window is the rack in which standard ‘Edmondson’-style card tickets were kept.

An inconspicuous but interesting feature of Norham station, seen in June 2017, is this narrow staircase and adjoining luggage slide. It is located between the booking office (right) and the porters’ rooms (left) on the down platform. The wall-mounted casement lantern will be noted.

This beautifully restored timber building on the down platform of Norham station, seen in June 2017, contains the stationmaster’s office, booking office and general room. Telegrams could be sent from many stations as indicated by the ‘Telegraph’ sign here; it is not known if the sign was
originally at this station.
