OSWESTRY (Cambrian)

1974 to 1995

By the early months of 1974 all that was left of the former Cambrian station at Oswestry was the 1863 building, the two platform, the Oswestry South signal box and the goods shed. Only the former up line remained as a bi-directional single track linking Blodwell to Gobowen. In this view the station building is seen looking south.

A view of Oswestry station looking west from hills to the east of the town in 1975. The photograph illustrates clearly the contraction that had taken place to the railway facilities of Oswestry in less than five years.

On 6 June 1986 a train of ballast from the Llanyblodwel Quarry is seen passing through Oswestry station. At the head of the train is class 31 locomotive. After closure of the former Cambrian line as a through route in January 1965 it was the quarries in the Blodwell area that kept the line through Oswestry station open.

When this view was taken in May 1995 the former Cambrian line through Oswestry had fallen out of use. In this view the station is seen looking north-east.
