Peebles station looking north-west c.1908. 487 was an NBR M Class Abbotsford 4-4-0, the name of the class derived from the use of 429, Abbotsford, on the official Neilson photograph. Built between 1877 and 1879 by Neilson and Co and named 'Montrose', it was rebuilt in 1904 along with its 11 classmates.  427 was to find fame in July 1916 when, whilst hauling a special train from Waverley to Carlisle, Driver D. Murray and Fireman J Ronalds completed the run in 1hr 44mins including a 9 min signal stop at Hawick. Although the load was only 32 tons, this was a record for the Waverley route which still stood in 1969 when BR closed the line. All the Abbotsfords were withdrawn by October 1926.
