A southbound local train approaching Ripon in September 1954. The loco is 45075, an ex LMS class 5, 4-6-0, commonly known as a Black Five. Designed by William A Stanier, the loco was built at Vulcan Foundry works in February 1935, one of 100 black fives built there. Upon nationalisation, it was reclassified, BR 5MT along with the rest of the 842 black fives transferred into BR stock. The loco is on a class B stopping train, denoted by the single lamp on the top bracket. The Black Fives had a reputation for go anywhere, do anything locos, at home on local goods as well as express passengers and were regularly recorded at 90mph. Following withdrawal from Normanton shed (20D) on 30.9.67, it was cut up at Cashmores of Great Bridge on 30.4.68. There are 18 Black Fives preserved and they are popular on preserved railways as well as mainline railtours.
