ROWSLEY SIDINGS

Rowsley Down Sidings signalbox in Midland Railway days with Signalman William Charles Kingman at the window. William Kingman was born at Bere Regis, Dorset in 1863. In the 1891 census he was living at 11 Midland Cottages Rowsley, which was later re-numbered 29. He was the first of a number of the Kingman family to work at Rowsley. Of particular interest in this photo is the steps and platform on the left behind the box. This was a shunter’s stage – the Head Shunter being able to direct movements from this position. It could also be used to check the contents of open wagons.
