ROWSLEY 2nd LOCOMOTIVE DEPOT

[Source: Glynn Waite (Rowsley Association)]

The Sidings were often affected by standing water and occasional flooding, especially when water from the hillside could not escape quickly into a rising River Derwent. This did not necessarily affect Rowsley men, but here we see that a Nottingham Guard was not impressed by the conditions. The reply stated that the Up Sidings had been in this state for some weeks(!), but that the engineer was to lay new pipes. It concluded by stating that two pairs of waders were available at the Depot and one of these could be loaned to the Nottingham guard on his next visit. Not a lot of sympathy then from those who worked in these conditions day in and day out.
