The Down platform waiting area c.1950s which provide limited shelter from the elements. Initially, passengers wishing to catch trains on the Down platform had to cross the line by a boarded crossing at the south end of the station (to the left of this photograph). If the weather was poor many left it until the last minute before they crossed from the relevant comfort of the waiting rooms on the Up side. Following the unfortunate death of a passenger on the crossing in January 1881, the inquest jury recommended that proper crossing arrangements should be provided as well as a waiting room on the Down platform. A subway was eventually opened in 1891, but there never was a waiting room on the Down platform.
