Station Name: SAFFRON WALDEN

This image is said to have been taken 'in the early 2000s' when the former industrial units on the site of the railway at Saffron Walden were being cleared away in preparation for residential development. This view is looking towards Saffron Walden station from South Road bridge and appears to have been taken through a zoom lens. The station building can be seen on the right, in front of which but not visible above, a short section of platform survives. The platform once extended to within a few yards of the bridge; compare this view with others from the same vantage point when the line was still open. Ahead of the camera and a little towards the right would have been the platform road while the loop would have been directly ahead and Foundry Siding to the left. Not immediately obvious above is a surviving section of the wall which once bounded Foundry Siding. It is still there as of 2015 but the scene is otherwise now very different with new buildings and the trackbed partly tarmac and partly grass nearer the bridge. Beyond the bridge, which is marked 'AEB 2117' (Audley End - Bartlow, Bridge  2117), and behind the camera a short section of trackbed survives - again as of 2015. To the left, the once familiar Barnard's granary has gone but other parts of the mill complex survive. On South Road, for example, and just out of view to the left stands Corn Mill Court now converted ino residential accommodation. Corn Mill Court is a sizeable complex extending back from South Road and West Road and along the latter can be seen further evidence of original buildings blended in with new-build. In the distance, above, modern buildings now block the trackbed and Debden Road bridge is behind the building directly ahead of the camera.
