Channel Tunnel work site seen from Shakespeare Cliff in January 1989. Channel Tunnel works begin. The first step is greatly to enlarge the land area by driving steel sheets into the sea bed to make a coffer dam. This was subsequently filled with concrete. Then the enclosed area pumped out and filled with sand.
