Until 1991 the Old Main Line through Shincliffe remained in use for diverted East Coast main line trains and for goods and mineral traffic. Here a Class 37 hauls a freight train southwards and it is about to pass Shincliffe station. This photograph was taken in 1991 shortly before the route was ‘mothballed’; after 21 years in suspended animation it was closed and the remaining tracks were lifted.
