Station Name: SOUTH GOSFORTH

The station building on the down (west) platform at South Gosforth. This Gothic-influenced Blyth & Tyne structure dates from the opening of the station in June 1864. Although decades of soot encrust it, the various ‘tangerine’ signs installed by BR(NE) add some relief, including the ‘Ambulance Station’ sign, below ‘Gentlemen’. The LNER’s contributions are the swan-neck lamp standard and nameplate. The photograph was taken in February 1964.
