Gosforth car sheds, looking west on 24 December 1977. The sheds, whose design was drawn up by the NER, were opened in October 1923 by the LNER. They were to house and service the EMUs following a fire at the Heaton sheds which had destroyed some of the fleet. Immediately north of the sheds, Gosforth Garden Village was built to house the employees and their families. As seen here, when the electric trains were withdrawn the sheds, which had already begun to house DMUs continued in this role.
