Station Name: SOUTH GOSFORTH

During the NER and LNER eras station staff found time to cultivate ornamental gardens. Stations vied with one another to produce the finest displays, and this tradition continued into the 1960s. Prizes were awarded for the ‘Best Kept Station’ and, despite their urban settings, Coast Circle stations competed successfully. Although Tynemouth repeatedly won the trophies for its extravagant floral arrangements, Jesmond and South Gosforth also made their mark. As we can see here in this 1920s view, the staff at South Gosforth took advantage of the cutting behind the up platform to put on a fine display; someone has even trimmed the bushes at the roadside to complete the charming scene.
