Station Name: SOUTH GOSFORTH

During the NER and LNER eras station staff found time to cultivate ornamental gardens. Stations vied with one another to produce the finest displays, and this tradition continued into the 1960s. Prizes were awarded for the ‘Best Kept Station’ and, despite their urban settings, Coast Circle stations competed successfully. Although Tynemouth repeatedly won the trophies for its extravagant floral arrangements, Jesmond and South Gosforth also made their mark. This 1920s view of the down platform shows the attractive garden in front of the stationmaster’s house - a feature which continued to be well maintained into the mid 1970s. The station name has also been added informally to the garden, reflecting the justifiable pride that the staff had in their place of work.
