Station Name: SPELLOW

Spellow station looking west in January 2008 shows that remains of both platforms are still present. The platform on the left of the picture would have served trains travelling towards Canada Dock and Alexandria Dock whilst the platform on the right served trains travelling towards Liverpool Lime Street. Straddling the line on the County Road overbridge is the station booking office which is still extant and in use as a Turf Accountant. In the centre of the building a bricked up doorway can be seen. From this doorway a set of covered steps led to a footbridge which connected to both platforms. A characteristic of the line from this point down to the docks is its steep cuttings and tunnels which were necessary to enable the line to get down to the docks through the natural sandstone
escapment that surrounds Liverpool.
