A southbound train waits in the up platform at St Boswells station early 20th century. 1256 was built by the North British Railway at their Cowlairs works in 1873. A Thomas Wheatley design and classed P by the NBR, this small class of eight locos were rebuilt in 1890/91 with Holmes boilers and cabs plus a slight increase in cylinder size. Six of the class passed to the LNER and were classifies E7 but withdrawals started early, 1925 seeing the first loco to go. The last E7 was withdrawn in 1927
