Stanhope & Tyne Railway

The original line was rope worked; from the top of Meeting Slacks Incline the line was built almost straight to a point called Park Head Wheel which was a wheel house which regulated the rope hauled wagons. Then there was another straight line from Park Head Wheel to Park Head Station.

Later The Stockton & Darlington built a deviation line to enable locomotive working through from Tow Law to the top of Weatherhill Incline above Stanhope.

About 2/3 of the distance along this deviation there was a loading bank which
was connected by a straight tramway up the hill to a sandstone quarry alongside the Stanhope to Edmundbyers road just by the road junction to Castleside.

Today on the roadside opposite this quarry there is a gate from where two tracks lead down the hillside one to the site of Park Head Wheel and Park Head House (no trace remains) and the second one straight down the hillside to the loading bank on the deviation crossing over the original course between Park Head Wheel and Park Head (Blanchland) Station, these tracks follow the course of the tramways down from the quarry.
