Stoke Station Gallery 2: Last Day - May 1976

No pictures have been found showing the goods yard at Stoke before closure. This view from an approaching westbound DMU was taken on 4 March 1967 the last day of public service. The goods yard closed on 19 April 1965 and the ground frame that controlled access to the yard was quickly removed and the track was later lifted. The wide goods dock served by a siding on either side is clearly seen in this view.

Stoke station looking east from A1092 bridge in September 1969; two years after the line closed to all traffic. The track is surprisingly clear of weeds. In November 1969 the contract for the removal of the permanent way was awarded to A. King and Sons of Norwich and the track was lifted in 1970.

Looking west towards Stoke station in 1974. the site of the old goods yard is now heavily overgrown. To the west of the station a new house has been build above the infilled track bed. Behind the house the village green has been reinstated.

Stoke station building in March 1976. The gent's toilet with its sloping roof is seen at the end of the building. The gents' toilet at a station was generally in a separate building while the ladies' toilet would be in the ladies' waiting room in the building. A 'way out' avoiding going through the ticket office is seen between the gents' toilet and the brick wall.

The door in the centre lead from the booking office onto the platform. The booking office and station office was to the right with the general waiting room to the left. From here. a door led into the ladies' waiting room which probably occupied part of the lower floor of the station house. Note the gents' toilet (far right) is separated from the station building by about six feet.

Looking east along Stoke platform in May 1976. Although the house was occupied the vegetation on the platform suggests the occupier had no access to the platform or the track bed.
