The Irish Railway Record Society (IRRS) rail tour of 13 June 1964 is seen at Strabane having arrived from Londonderry Foyle Road. At the head of the train is UTA 4-4-0 S class locomotive number 60 (former GNRI 172) 'Slieve Donard'. The engine was built in 1913 and would be withdrawn by the UTA in May 1965. Tbe train is formed from coaches of the CIE.

Looking north towards Strabane station on 1 September 1964 from the south side of the River Mourne. The 1911 GNRI Mourne Bridge dominates the view. On the far side of the river Strabane South cabin can be seen and beyond it the station. Crossing the bridge is the 10.15am Londonderry Foyle road to Belfast Great Victoria Street service with UTA 4-4-0 S class locomotive number 174 at its head.

The north end of Strabane station looking north on 5 September 1964. The Strabane North cabin which controlled the north end of the station is clearly shown. To the right in the distance the transhipment shed can be seen. Prior to 1960 the shed had facilitated transhipment of goods between the 3ft Gauge CDR lines and the 5ft 3inch main line. At this date CDR goods came in by lorry. To the right a service to Londonderry Foyle Road service is seen departing. At the head of the train is UTA 0-6-0 SG class locomotive number 44 (ex-GNRI 176).

The GNRI station building at Strabane seen in 1964. This building housed the main facilities including the booking office.


Looking north along the down island platform at Strabane in 1964. At this time the platform to the right carried the number 2 whilst the one to the left carried no number and was not usually used by passenger trains. The platform canopy is shown to good effect.

A view looking south along the Strabane transhipment shed platform in 1964. The former GNRI side of the platform is to the left and is occupied by wagons of the UTA. The platform face to the right had served the CDR 3ft gauge lines. From 1894 until February 1960 transfer had been between rail vehicles on the 3ft CDR and the 5ft 3in GNRI (from 1958 the UTA). After the last CDR goods trains had run the tracks were taken up and the area was adapted for road vehicles as shown in this view. The CDR was a completely road based operation at this time having a fleet of buses, vans and lorry’s.

Strabane South Cabin looking south in 1964. The cabin controlled the southern end of Strabane station and the Lifford Road level crossing which can be seen in this view. The wooden platform had been provided so that single line tokens could be exchanged between signalmen and locomotive crews.

The south end of Strabane station seen from the footbridge on a cold and wet day in January 1965. Strabane South cabin can be seen in the distance and beyond it the Lifford Road level crossing. To the right of the main line the former CDR yard can be seen with stored items of 3ft gauge rolling stock. Underneath the footbridge is a UTA 4-4-0 locomotive that was probably carrying out shunting duties.

A view looking north at the north end of Strabane station after closure on 14 July 1965. Weeds have started to make their presence felt. The track would be lifted in the early months of 1966.
