The Railway Tavern pub in April 1932. Despite its Art Deco appearance the Tavern dated from the mid-19th century and was opposite the original entrance to the station in Bridge Road and ideally sited for passengers using the station. When the new station opened on the High Street the pub was not so well placed. During WW2 it was damaged by enemy action when a high explosive bomb was dropped near Bridge Road on 8 December 1940. After repairs the Tavern reopened on 27 November 1942..
