Looking south-west over the centre of Sunderland in 1970 the amount of recent rebuilding is striking. In the distance the sweeping curve of the railway from Penshaw can be seen as it joins the line from Middlesbrough (upper left) before vanishing under the mid 1960s. Users of Sunderland station are condemned to wait on gloomy platforms concealed by a steel and concrete deck supporting commercial development: the north of England’s equivalent of Birmingham New Street!
