Tweedmouth station Gallery 5: August 1966 - August 1969


The elegant but grimy frontage of Tweedmouth station is seen in August 1966, looking north across the forecourt. The dignity of the approach to the station was somewhat disfigured by coal sidings which abutted it, seen in the foreground. By this date Tweedmouth station had been closed to passenger traffic for over two years, and it would be demolished before the end of the decade. Coal traffic continued to be handled at Tweedmouth until the 1980s.

A general view of Tweedmouth, looking north-west in August 1966. The passenger station is in the background, and the Newcastle & Berwick Railway goods shed, adapted as a locomotive repair shop, is on the right. The Diesel-Electric ‘Type 4’ (later Class 40) locomotive handled freight trains at Tweedmouth in the shed’s final years.

The enginemen’s cottages at Tweedmouth are seen from the sidings, looking north-west in 1966. Benjamin Green designed the cottages for the Newcastle & Berwick railway to complement the architecture of the station. Unfortunately they were demolished (probably in the late 1960s) along with all of the other N&B structures. Only the 1878 NER roundhouse survives in 2015.

This is one of a valuable series of pictures of ECML lineside features taken by the photographer from trains on 12 August 1969. On the far side of the dispiriting scene of abandoned trackwork south-east of the former passenger station at Tweedmouth the ramp leads up to the disused coaling stage. Beyond the coaling stage is the NER roundhouse (built in 1877-78). The 1850 engine shed was to the left of the coaling stage.

Tweedmouth engine repair shop, looking south-east from a passing train on 12 August 1969. The handsome stone-built Gothic structure was originally the station’s goods warehouse, but it was adapted for its role as a repair shop when a new and substantially larger warehouse was built on the opposite side of the main line. Both of the structures have long been demolished.
