Station Name: TWEEDMOUTH

[Source: Alan Young]

An oblique aerial view of Tweedmouth station in April 1949, looking north. The Newcastle & Berwick Railway station building is seen far-left, the single-storey offices and waiting facilities stretching along the down platform, and the two-storey former Station Hotel set at right angles to them. The forecourt is shared with the coal depot, and sidings on which coal and livestock wagons are standing can be seen; the crane to service these sidings is at the lower right corner of the image. The East Coast main line widens to four tracks through the passenger station, and on the far side of these tracks the up platform is seen; its platform roofing, installed in 1906 when the original trainshed was dismantled, is conspicuous and complements the roofing on the down platform. A little below the centre, on the down side, is the Gothic N&B goods warehouse, which was adapted by the North Eastern Railway to serve as a loco repair facility and was still used as such at the time of this photograph. The N&B loco shed is in the lower right corner; this straight 4-road shed was supplemented by a larger ‘square roundhouse’ in 1877-78, out of sight to the right of the 4-road shed. A double track ramp alongside the shed runs over the coal drops. The goods sidings and the large warehouse (built 1902-03) occupy a large acreage on the up (far) side of the main line and passenger station. The freight branch to Tweed Dock curves off the picture to the right, reached by a reversal from the goods yard. Tweedmouth South signal box is just right of centre, between the up slow main line and the goods sidings. On the main line, between the loco repair shop and loco shed, a two-coach passenger train can be seen. This is probably a Berwick to Kelso working which has passed through Tweedmouth station and its loco is now propelling back into the down platform where it will call before proceeding to Kelso. Trains serving the branch
always used the down platform.
