Tynemouth station in 1959, looking north from the down platform. The expanse of platform roofing can be appreciated here, visually enhanced by the gentle curve of the platforms. The LNER ‘running-in nameboard (actually in a running-out position) is of the unusual ‘diamond’ style believed to be unique to the Coast Circle stations. Some remnants of the formerly ambitious station garden can be
seen in the foreground.
