A passenger approaches the gap in the iron fencing at the ticket inspection booth on the up platform. The corporate identity hanging sign announces a departure via Wallsend. The sign was rarely removed since these were the only trains regularly to use this platform. Even at this stage in its life the station was allowed some hanging baskets, but the days of the station resembling the hothouse at Kew Gardens were long past.
