A class 104 DMU in a southern bay platform in February 1980, six months before the Metro trains were introduced on the northern section of the Coast Circle and the route via Wallsend was closed for conversion to Metro use. The elaborate ironwork and extensive glazed roofing of the station are seen to good effect in this view.
