The sheer size of Grade II listed Tynemouth station offers a challenge in terms of maintenance and restoration. In October 1991 the trackbed at the southern bay platforms is returning to nature, and the roofing above the platforms has lost its glass. Meanwhile Metro trains come and go regularly at the through platforms to the left.
