Under Metro administration Tynemouth station is unnecessarily large for the short trains that serve it and the reduced patronage in comparison with years prior to World War II. Its designation as a Grade II listed building in 1978 required them to retain and manage the building – unless a new ‘halt’ was provided on a nearby site to replace it. Details such as these shown here are quite delightful. The almost ecclesiastical mounting of the traditional clock is charming, and the ‘Sugg’ gas lamp contributes additional character.
