A diverted East Coast main line southbound express passes the site of Usworth station in the late 1980s. Built at Brush Falcon works 47555 ‘The Commonwealth Spirit’ entered service in Februry 1964 as D1717.  From January to September 1974 it was designated 47126. The intended name was ‘Spirit of the Commonwealth’, but it was considered to be 'too long', so the shortened version was eventually adopted. The loco was cut up at Wigan CRDC (EWS) in October 1999.
