Between Walton on the Hill Station and Huskisson the most significant
engineering works on the CLC North Liverpool Extension Line had to
be undertaken. This was because the natural sandstone escarpment that
rises to the east of the city of Liverpool had to be overcome in order
to get the line down to Huskisson. The works required three tunnels
at Walton on the Hill and extensive cuttings at Kirkdale. The three
tunnels which started at the Huskisson end of Walton on the Hill Station
where only separated by two short cuttings as shown on the picture
above which shows the north end tunnel mouth of Walton on the Hill
Tunnel No. 2 seen here in April 2005 from Liston Street bridge.
