Station Name: WARDLEWORTH

Looking west in June 2016 at Whitworth Road Tunnel between the stations of Wardleworth and Shawclough & Healey on the former Facit Branch.  Whereas most structures on the Facit Branch were of sandstone, two major works at the Rochdale end were of red brick: the Roch Viaduct (now demolished) and this 43yd single-track tunnel which took the railway under the main road between Rochdale, Whitworth, Bacup and Burnley. The tunnel has straight sidewalls and a semi-circular arch. The large wing-wall to the left of the portal will be noted, with evidence of efflorescence – soluble salts washed out of the structure, causing the white staining.
