Whereas most structures on the Facit Branch were of sandstone, two major works at the Rochdale end were of red brick: the Roch Viaduct (now demolished) and this 43yd single-track tunnel which took the railway under the main road between Rochdale, Whitworth, Bacup and Burnley.
