Looking east at the Newchurch tunnels in April 1976. The tunnels were a short distance to the east of Waterfoot for Newchurch station. The tunnel to the left is Newchurch Number 1 which was completed in 1852. Originally a single track line had passed through this tunnel and into another called Newchurch Number 2. When it was decided to double the line in 1876 a new tunnel called Newchurch Number 3 was built. It is the tunnel to the right. It paralleled tunnels number 1 and 2.
