Mixed gauge track at Welshpool stations cattle dock seen in July 1970. The 2ft 6inch narrow gauge track was that of the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway which had opened in 1903 and closed in 1956.

Welshpool station looking south-west on 10 June 1972 as an Aberystwyth to London Euston service heads northwards towards Shrewsbury. On the down line a Metro-Cammel DMU can be seen on a down service. Only two platforms remained in use at this time.
