A DMU stands in the down platform at West Monkseaton station in May 1979. Buffer stops have been installed beneath the bridge, accompanied on the platform by a ‘Trains stop here’ sign. The line beyond was temporarily closed for Metro conversion work. Note the bars fitted to the windows of the carriage doors to prevent passengers from leaning out of them. This was done because of limited clearances on the Coast Circle line.
