On 28 October 1961, the final day of service, Class D1 4-4-0 No.31739 has arrived at Westerham with set 277, reduced from ten to seven coaches for the occasion. Although for most of its life the Westerham branch saw only tank locomotives, it was capable of accepting heavier main line locomotives so the small 4-4-0 would have provided no headaches for the civil engineer.
