The exterior of Whitley Bay station looking south in April 1973. The station was built on an extravagant scale, befitting the town’s flourishing tourist industry and its role as an expanding dormitory settlement for Newcastle. The glazed verandahs either side of the clock tower were removed by 1976, but replacements have been fitted by the Metro.
