Beddington Lane Gallery 4: May 1982 - Last Day

An unidentified Class 416 EMU waits at Beddington Lane station circa May 1982. The level crossing gates were replaced by automatic lifting barriers. The signal box has now closed and will soon be demolished; the signal post has already gone. Since winter 1978/79 the BR Southern Region green signage has been replaced by bland Corporate Identity signs.

By the late 1980s the signage had changed again following the line becoming part of Network SouthEast in 1986. The station buildings have also been repainted in Network SouthEast colours and new platform lighting has been installed. The station is seen from the public footpath (now closed) running alongside the track.

By April 1997 Beddington Lane is an unstaffed halt awaiting closure. The station building was demolished a few years earlier and has now been replaced by a ‘bus’ shelter. Most other staff buildings seen in the photos above have also been demolished.

A class 456 EMU No. 456018 waits at Beddington Lane station before departing for Wimbledon in April 1997. Two passengers boarded the train and two alighted. The British Rail Class 456 electric multiple-unit trains were built by BREL York works from 1990-91. 24 two-car units were built as direct replacements for the elderly Class 416 2EPB units which operated on the Central Division of the Southern Region of British Rail. Units were delivered into traffic painted in Network SouthEast blue, red and white livery. Units were numbered in the range 456001-024. Each unit consisted of two carriages: a driving motor and a driving trailer.

In later years Beddington Lane was generally a very quiet station, except in rush hours. On the last day the station was busier with enthusiasts and local people keen to have a last journey on the line.
