A local passenger train hauled by Class 2MT 2-6-0 No.78049 is standing at the down platform of Coldstream station c1963. The loco was built at Darlington works in November 1955 and would be withdrawn from 64A, St Margarets shed, in August 1966.

The stone-built signal box at Coldstream replaced an earlier box in 1887 as part of the project to enhance the station’s facilities to cope with the new line to Alnwick. In the background is the goods warehouse. It is not known when this photograph was taken.

Part of the up platform at Coldstream with the signal box is seen c1963 looking north-west. The goods yard is in the background.
The north end of Coldstream station circa early 1960s. At this stage the goods yard appears still to be handling a modest amount of traffic.
A bucolic scene, looking north at Coldstream c1963 as standard 2MT 2-6-0 No.78048 enters with a single-coach train for St Boswells. Standing in front of the station office on the up platform, the two gentlemen appear not to be in a hurry to catch the train. On the down platform a trolley is in place to carry any parcels that are unloaded. In the background 3MT 2-6-0 No.77002 is on the local goods. No.78048 was built at Darlington works in October 1955. Her shed was 64G, Hawick, from which she would be withdrawn in July 1964. No.77002 was built at Swindon works in February 1954 and was withdrawn from 50A, York North shed in June 1967.

A general view of Coldstream station looking south c1964 from the up platform. The down platform appears to be neglected judging by the uncontrolled vegetation, so closure to passengers is imminent or has recently taken place.

Hauling a single coach, 4MT 2-6-0 No.76050 is entering Coldstream station in early 1964 en route for St Boswells. The signal box, footbridge and oil lantern will be noted. The loco was built at Doncaster works in August 1956 and her short, active life ended in September 1965 when she was withdrawn from 64G, Hawick shed. In November 1966 she was cut up by Shipbreaking Industries Ltd, Faslane.

In spring 1964, within a few weeks of closure to passengers, a single-coach train for Berwick-upon-Tweed is seen from the footbridge of Coldstream station. The loco, 4MT 2-6-0 No.76050, was built at Doncaster works in August 1956. In September 1965 she was withdrawn from 64G, Hawick shed to be cut up by Shipbreaking Industries Ltd, Faslane in November 1966.

On Saturday 13 June 1964, smartly turned out to the end, Coldstream’s stationmaster checks train doors on the final up (eastbound) service due to depart at 5.13pm. The nameplate on the signal box still appears to display faded LNER paint, rather than BR(NE) tangerine.

Coldstream station looking south c1964, possibly after closure to passengers. Goods services continued until spring 1965. A few wagons are occupying the goods yard. On the far right the gable end of the red-brick goods warehouse can be seen and, close by, a goods platform / loading bank which would be the last substantial part of the station to survive. In the background the unusual roof is part of the auction mart.
