Looking south c1964 beyond Coldstream station towards the divergence of the double-track line to Kelso (right) and the single track to Wooler. The Wooler line is on a gradient of 1 in 133 as it rises to breast a low watershed between the Tweed and Bowmont valleys, whilst the Kelso line from which the photo is taken is falling at 1 in 1320.

up line was lifted.

The northern end of Coldstream station’s passenger platforms c1968. The down track has been removed but the up track is still in place; it would be lifted in 1969/70. The railway cottages can be
seen far right.

North-east of Coldstream station in 1969 D3638 is with a contractor’s train engaged in removing the up track of the former NER Kelso Branch; the down track had been removed in 1966. Much of the track lifting and recovery work on this line was undertaken by private organisations on behalf of British Rail. The diesel loco seen here had previously been withdrawn but was subsequently reinstated and leased out to the firm concerned for this specific purpose.

Looking south at Coldstream on 2 January 1976. The passenger station (site immediately beyond the left edge of this photo) has been demolished and a small residential estate is being developed which will eventually occupy the site of the station. The goods platform in the foreground is the last substantial part of the station to survive at this date together with a concrete post topped by a lantern cradle. The hexagonal roof belongs to the auction mart.

The site of Coldstream station in June 2011. The view is south-westwards into a cul-de-sac section of Station Gardens. The position of the photographer is approximately on the site of the down platform and the main building would have been in the road in the middle distance.
