Norham Station Gallery 4:
August 2001 - December 2016

Looking east along the down platform of Norham station in August 2001. The conifers, seen in their infancy on 1988 photographs, now provide a dense screen, contrasting sharply with the openness of the view eastwards when the line was open.

The forecourt of Norham station, plus somebody’s cat, looking westwards in August 2001. The buildings look entirely different from the platform elevation, as only the upper floor of the stationmaster’s house can be seen at platform level. The former goods office is in the foreground, right.

The former goods yard at Norham station looking east in August 2001. The ballasted sidings area is now a well-maintained lawn. The hipped-roofed lime depot and the goods shed beyond, with its pitched roof, can be seen. The platform to the right is the former goods loading bank.

Norham station’s signal box, goods yard and passenger station are seen in August 2001, looking east. The whole site was purchased by Peter Short, the last stationmaster, and gradually transformed into a private museum. Maintenance of the extensive lawn occupying the former trackbed must
be no easy matter.

The forecourt side of the buildings at Norham station looking east in December 2016. The upper storey of the stone building in the foreground contained two rooms, one with a fireplace and both with casement windows overlooking the goods yard which was the porters’ rest area and office. Beyond the garden gnomes, the single-storey stone pent-roofed building was the weighbridge (and probably general administration) office with the weighbridge directly in front of it. This building was converted in the early 1970s into a ladies’ and gents’ washroom/toilets facility designed for use by the static caravan (5 units) visitors. The elevated timber building was the stationmaster’s office, booking office and general room.
