PRIESTFIELD GALLERY 2

Priestfield Signal Box was located on the opposite side of George Street from the station, on the down (Wolverhampton direction) side. It was unusual, in the fact, that it was a McKenzie & Holland design (rather than a GWR) it dated from 1888 when it was fitted with a 29 lever frame. On 28 September 1925 a 36 lever GWR 3-bar vertical tappet frame was commissioned,
the box was abolished on 3 December 1973.

The early 1970s saw the former OWWR line lifted and the platform buildings demolished with Totems and signage from the Dudley platforms being removed, an air of neglect began to take over.

The waiting shelter on the Birmingham bound platform was the only structure remaining at the station in the 1970s. With part of its valance missing, only half a bench and lantern smashed it would certainly not be a particularly plesant place to await the arrival of a train during the hours of darkness.

The pointwork still remained for the OWWR lines into the 1970s although clipped out of use. The signal for Wolverhampton is in the off position (possibly indicating a train is due or the box is switched out) a lone figure strolls along the Birmingham platform.

Looking across towards the main line platforms in the early 1970s the
terrible state of the station is apparent.

By October 1978 the platform areas had been virtually engulfed by nature, the main lines were still seeing regular traffic to the Wolverhampton Steel Terminal The fencing, in the foreground, was the remains of the entrance from John Street.

A sad looking station site in October 1978, shiny rails indicate regular traffic on the former main line.
